This seminar provided a timely opportunity to discuss key challenges for the non-renewable and renewable energy sectors in Northern Ireland.
It was timed as the Department carried out its mid-term review of the 2010 Strategic Energy Framework, and as the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee carried out its Electricity market in Northern Ireland inquiry.
Delegates looked at how Northern Ireland can secure long-term security of supply, whilst also ensuring that energy prices are at a level satisfactory to consumers, investors and potential investors. Initiatives to integrate with neighbouring energy markets and supplies were examined, particularly in light of potential challenges arising from the result of the EU Referendum in the UK - including the introduction of the Integrated Single Electricity Market (I-SEM) - which was to be put in place by the end of 2017, but which has been delayed until 2018 - and the future of the North-South Interconnector project.
Further sessions focused upon the next steps for renewable energy following the closure of the Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation scheme and Renewable Heat Incentive.
The conference brought together senior officials from the Northern Ireland assembly and legislative departments with key stakeholders from the energy market, such as energy providers, manufacturing firms and consumer groups.
