Policy Forum for Northern Ireland

Next steps for city and growth deals in Northern Ireland - implementation, co-ordination and ensuring inclusive growth

Morning, Wednesday, 4th December 2019

Belfast

THIS EVENT IS CPD CERTIFIED

This timely seminar will bring together key policymakers and key stakeholders to examine the next steps for city and growth deals in Northern Ireland.

It follows the signing of the Heads of Terms for the Belfast City Region Deal in March, in a deal expected to bring up to £1bn in investment to the region, and the announcement of the £105m Derry-Londonderry Region economic package, consisting of a city deal and an additional Inclusive Future Fund, in early May.

The conference will bring together representatives involved in city and growth deals at different stages - and delegates will discuss the progress, and challenges, in delivering the terms agreed as part of the two existing city deals in Northern Ireland, as well as the possibility of further growth deals in other areas of Northern Ireland.

Sessions will consider the delivery of the 22 projects in Belfast - particularly in the transport network, the innovation and digital sector, tourism, regeneration and skills - and the development of business cases for the projects in Derry City and Strabane which are expected to focus on enhancing the region’s innovation and digital capabilities.

Delegates will also examine the next steps in developing proposals to meet local needs, as well as putting in place effective governance systems and the role of the different layers of government in implementation, particularly in the current absence of an executive at Stormont.

Further sessions will look at how at how coordination and collaboration between city and growth deal areas can be developed to maximise growth and investment across Northern Ireland. There will also be discussion on how to promote inclusive growth and how the investment at the centre of the city and growth deals will ensure social regeneration.
