This conference examined the way forward for mental health provision in Northern Ireland.
It was an opportunity to discuss the Mental Health Strategy 2021-2031, which sets out the future direction of mental health services in Northern Ireland for the next decade, including a key focus on ensuring long-term improvements in mental health outcomes.
Areas for discussion included:
- the Strategy - including:
- ambitions and scope - in the context of the overall priorities for mental health provision in Northern Ireland
- implementation - service reorganisation, funding, cost-effective provision, meeting demand, and achieving equity in access across different regions
- new ways of working - research and innovation, use of data, digital mental health services, and workforce training and wellbeing
- children and young people - service coordination and the role of educational settings, early intervention, support for families, and transitions to adult services
- COVID-19 - tackling the continuing impact of the pandemic on mental health, and meeting demand moving forward
- patient and public engagement - improving access to services, and encouraging people to seek support
We were pleased to be able to include keynote contributions from: Peter Toogood, Director of Mental Health, Department of Health; and Professor Siobhan O’Neill, Interim Mental Health Champion for Northern Ireland; and Professor of Mental Health Sciences, Ulster University.
The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside Members of the Legislative Assembly, and key policy officials who attended from the Department of Health; the Department of Justice; the Northern Ireland Audit Office; and the Home Office.
